One of the beauties of Window Film is the ability to completely remove it without a trace. This could be for a number of reasons such as end of tenancy agreements, accidental damage, age or just wanting to update.
Some brands of window film may fade, blister, crack, peel or delaminate as they age.
Window tint removal can be quite easy once you know how its done. A simple method that works with some window tints and frosted films is to soften the adhesive by soaking it.
Here's How
- Use a spray bottle and add 1-2 caps of detergent per litre of water to make a soapy mixture.
- Apply a liberal amount of this water to the window film, and cover it with plastic food wrap, newspaper, or something similar for 3-5 hours.
- The process may work better if the sun is on the glass but don't let the covering dry out.
- Add more soapy water if necessary.
- Once the film has soaked sufficiently, it may be possible to peel it off the glass, starting from a corner and pulling slowly.
- The objective is to remove as much of the adhesive as possible with the film.
Other tips
- If the film fragments you will have to use a razor blade.
- If only the top layer comes off you can either soak it again or use a razor on the under layer.
- If the film won't budge use a heavy duty scraper and lots of muscle.
- Only use scrapers designed for glass (Stainless Steel blades are the preferred option) and regularly wet the window with soapy water to help the scraper. Your local cleaning supply store should have a choice of scrapers for glass such as Ettore Champion® Scraper see Ettore.com
- If available a steamer can help, but avoid using one on large or laminated panes of glass as cracking can occur.
